This project explores memory and narrative through experimental typography on a personal level. Centered on family relationships and emotional introspection, it investigates how materiality can convey affective meaning. By using hand stitching as both medium and method, the work translates the invisible threads of familial connection into tactile, visual form—transforming emotion into type.

The traditional Chinese character for family, 親, features an ancient bronze inscription portraying two individuals. The left part, 亲, resembling a knife, symbolizes a "criminal," while the right part, 見, signifies a relative and conveys the concept of "meeting." This intricate character encapsulates that family members consistently care for each other, transcending individual identities.
In simplified Chinese, the character evolves, retaining only the left part, 亲, symbolizing familial connection. Separating these components across two panels visually emphasizes the distinctness and interconnectedness inherent in family bonds.

Embracing a metaphorical approach, embroidery becomes a medium to express my familial relationships. Like the perfect front surface, family dynamics may seem flawless, yet the back may reveal a certain intricacy. In Chinese culture, the red thread represents the threads of fate binding individuals. Handmade embroidery adds a personal touch and influences the overall design and tone of expression.
During the stitching process, the left part, 亲, representing my family, is stitched first. The excess thread left at the back is then utilized to craft the character's right side, 見, symbolizing myself. However, the thread isn't sufficient to complete the entire character, conveying that my family environment shapes my character and influences my actions. Yet, there remains ample space for personal exploration and development.
